* * * *

Edward Green was acting strange, Noel noticed. It wasn’t any one thing in particular he was doing, but having his body powdered by another guy was more than just a little odd. Edward had even given him a facial, paying attention to his lips. Then he kissed them when he finished washing and massaging them. Luke used to do crazy stuff like that too whenever Noel came back from a photo shoot or anytime he’d been exposed to a lot of people.

Dinner was flavorful and completely vegan. The chef’s name was Alfonso. Noel didn’t even flinch when he saw Edward devour a steak big enough to choke a horse and a baked potato smothered in sour cream and chives he’d ordered from room service. Edward had polished off two glasses of wine, too.

“What was it like growing up in Boston with a family of police?” Noel asked him after dinner. They had gone for a walk.

“It was fun most of the time,” Edward said. “They would tell us younger kids’ stories about their cases, and they taught us how to box and self-defense.”

“Even Andrew?” Noel asked.

“Why are you asking about him?”

“Because he’s your cousin,” Noel said.

“I’m surprised you remembered his name.”

“Andy is kind of hard to forget with that blond hair and long legs,” Noel said, messing with him.

Edward snarled at him.

“Were the two of you close?”

“He used to follow me around everywhere,” Edward answered. “His brother Joey, too.”

“He has a brother? What does he do for a living?”

“He’s a bodyguard,” Edward answered.

“Is Andrew…?”

“Yes, and out of the closet before you ask.”

“I wasn’t going to ask,” Noel said, twirling a lock of hair at the back of his head.

Edward watched, transfixed for a moment.

“Has he always wanted to be a model?”

That broke the spell. “Yes. He knew how to put on makeup by the time he turned ten. That was right around the time I started eating smarty-pants idols for dinner.”

Noel faked a shudder.

“Andy took his mother to his first audition. He actually aced it on the first try.”

“How old were you when you first discovered you didn’t like girls?” Noel asked.

“I thought we were talking about Andy.”

“Now I want to know about you.”

“Ten and in love with this boy from the neighborhood. He was sixteen, had long blond hair and blue eyes.”

“Like Frankie?” Noel asked.

“Kind of, but taller, with straighter hair, and he couldn’t sing,” Edward said.

“Oh,” Noel said, realizing that Edward had caught on to the question. “Did you ever get the chance to tell him how you felt?”

Edward shook his head. “No. His family moved away the following year. That damn near broke my heart.”

“What did you do?”

“I threw all my energy into art around that time. What about you?”

“I was born this way,” Noel answered. “I didn’t need to come out to my family because they always knew I was gay.”

“Did you get bullied much in school?”

Noel shook his head. “Believe it or not, no. I had lots of friends, was very popular with the ladies and was the president of the glee club.
